Psalm 114 is one of the Hallel Psalms, the songs traditionally sung during the Passover. The psalm speaks of God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt and the response of nature to God’s presence (the sea fled, the Jordan turned back, the mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs). There is an ABBA structure to the psalm which I have reflected in the musical setting. I have also tried to capture some of the natural inflection of the text as well as some of the meaning (fleeing, skipping, etc.).
